Dear KMS Family
We have had an even busier third term than usual with an overflow of events from the end of last term’s disruption by the calamitous fire. We are however back on track and delighted that our Knysna community has worked so hard together to restore our beautiful town and surrounding areas.
Our third term events have been as follows:-
Sport: Congratulations to Beyleveld for winning both the Senior Interhouse Hockey and Soccer matches. We also congratulate Gryffenberg on winning Interhouse Netball.
Market Day 9 – 12: The 9 – 12 parents and students provided a stunning array of mouthwatering sweet and savoury snacks which sold out very quickly from the specially decorated tables in the quad. Under the watchful eyes of Bianca, Joy and Lusanda, the children furthered their Business & Economic skills, organizing and advertising the event, which was very well supported. Funds raised will go towards classroom equipment and the 9 – 12 outing.
Dads hard at work!
Science Fair 9 – 12: Divided into small groups, the 9 – 12 students chose experiments to demonstrate the phases of matter in Science, or the movements of tectonic plates in Physical Geography. The experiments took place outside and everyone enjoyed an interesting and instructive morning.

Knysna Mall Display: Grateful thanks to our Staff and Pupils who put time and effort into an excellent presentation of our school at the Knysna Mall on Saturday 26th August. Special thanks to Fiona Metelerkamp for arranging a display of all phases and what we offer, in a selection of beautifully headed photographs. Also to the Preschool Staff whose demonstrations of Montessori Equipment attracted a lot of attention. It was a happy and very successful day.
Spring Teas, Junior and Preschool: The Preschool Spring Tea took place on 31st August. The little ones, in a wonderful array of spring hats, touched the hearts of parents, grandparents and friends in a packed amphitheatre, with their rendition of “A Knysna Country Garden.” The adults also produced some amazing hat creations; prizes were awarded and a sumptuous tea enjoyed by all.
The following day the Junior School in their own creative headgear sang tributes to Maria Montessori and served refreshments from beautifully decorated tables. Thanks to those who contributed spring snacks and dreamed up the lovely hats!
Open Day 7thSeptember: We were proud to show several interested parents around our school on Open Day. The grounds, office, classrooms, library, kitchen, hostel and Occupation Centre all looked exceptionally attractive and even the weather played along. KMS shone!
The Friday Market out of Hibernation: The Friday Market re-opened for its 2017 summer season on 8th September.
On offer this season, to add to the familiar favourites, we have some new food vendors, crafters and musicians. We hope our parents will continue to support our main school fundraiser, and our thanks to Kerrey and the Friday Market team Leighann and Ilse, for all the hard work involved in maintaining Knysna’s favourite Friday summer evening venue.
Spur Mountain Biking Race: On Saturday 9th September 147 cyclists competed in the Spur MTB Race. With only eight riders, Montessori High School students achieved 5th place, while our Junior cyclists came in 2nd with 249 points.
Knysna Montessori also had the following podium places:-
Jethro Stead 4th Youth Men B
Declan Page 5th Youth Men A
Oliver Price 3rd Sub Junior Boys High School
Zinedine de Nil 1st Sub Junior Boys Primary School
Saige Doubell 4th Sprog Girls
Leonard Collins 4th Nipper Boys
Gita Hildebrand 1st Nipper Girls
Chloe Price 3rd Nipper Girls
Natalie Collins 1st Sub Nipper Girls
Congratulations to all our cyclists, and many thanks to Anthony, Max and Oz Campbell for putting together a well-marked and much complimented cycle track. Many thanks to Leigh, Kerrey, Del, Taddy, our ground staff and other staff members and children for their hard work and support. To all the Montessori Moms and Dads who contributed their support in a variety of ways – many thanks; you helped to make the event so successful.
All results and photos will be on MAP.
Matric Dance Saturday 16th September: Our beautiful young adults from the 2017 Matric Group arrived at 4.30 with parents and family members for pre-dinner drinks at the Conrad Pezula Clubhouse, and went on to enjoy a three-course dinner in the Club dining area. Speeches were made with much laughter (and a few tears!) and the atmosphere was happy and celebratory. The theme was Red Carpet, in gold, reds and black, and Jacqui Hahn and the Gr. 11 Dance Committee, headed up by Dana, worked tirelessly all day to create a magic and welcoming décor.
Our thanks to Jacqui, Dana and the Gr 11 Committee for the huge time and effort they put into making it a wonderfully successful evening. Many thanks too, to Russel Gammon for photography, and Pezula Events Planner, Chantal Smythe.
International Peace Day Thursday 21st September
Grade 7 students and teachers from Riverwood and Knysna Primary came to visit our school. They were shown round the Occupation Centre and farmyard which aroused great interest and enthusiasm. They were also taken on a short peace walk through the forest, and then joined our 6 – 9’s and 9 – 12’s in the amphitheatre, where they enjoyed Sonia’s presentation of what is on offer at Knysna Montessori. They joined our students in singing the Montessori song “Light a candle for peace”, candles were lit, and they finished with light refreshments on the Friday Market Field.
Judging by their very positive reaction, we hope to be seeing at least a few of them at our school next year!
The Goats are always a great hit!
